About Me

Atlanta, Georgia, United States
My first book, "Invisible Sisters: A Memoir" has been named one of "Twenty Five Books All Georgians Should Read!" I would love to visit your bookclub, either in person (in the South) or through the magic of electronics. My writing has received a "Special Mention" for a 2008 Pushcart Prize. I have been honored with a residency at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Bethany, CT., a Fellowship at the Hambidge Center for Creative Arts in Rabun Gap, Georgia, and the 2009 Peter Taylor Nonfiction Fellowship at the Kenyon Review Writers Workshop. Locally, I teach workshops in creative writing, memoir, and feature journalism, and am a member of the faculty of an art college, where I teach screenwriting. I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Queens University of Charlotte (N.C.) and a B.S. in Communication from Emerson College, in Boston. I used to work in television. I did not push the broom behind the elephant. Usually, I served as mahout - I drove the (allegorical) elephant. If he was SAG or AFTRA. Rock stars do not scare me.

Brain Density

This is an image of a phrenology map. I am lately researching phrenology for this novel in progress. What is phrenology? Walt Whitman was into it.

I haven't forgotten my blog-sponsibilities. I will do the list of ten images to capture a period of time and space, as directed by my friend the brilliant Janisse Ray.

1. Saw Janisse Ray speak at the Smith Gilbert gardens in Kennesaw. Atlantans, go there! It's a hidden gem!
2. Ah, the teaching quarter begins again. That's where I've been. In class!
3. Book proposal in progress. Shhhh.
4. Requires research and marketing-brain. A portion usually dormant.
5. Oh, residencies from whom I'm waiting to hear - when will it be March so you can dash my hopes?
6. Yoga practice. Lots of discussion and action with things like my rhomboids and my midline. Does not require brain. (See item #1)
7. Urban Cannibal's CSA has provided with a box of wondrous things.
8. Now I have a lot of ginger and will try to make candied ginger.
9. Ginger is a vaso-dilator. Alleviates headaches.
10. I am no prescriber, I just play one on my blog.

11. (A bonus round!) See you on Monday at Wingate University in Charlotte NC! Be there or be square!

It was - I changed it because I realized I'd forgotten to credit.

Wish I'd seen the show!

I understand that Jessica Handler collects LP's. I read it today in the AJC. I have at least 100 or more LP's that I'm converting to CD's. Just wondering if she would be interested in them before I toss them. jbn9454@aol.com

@jdbn9454 oh, how I hate to hear that they'll be tossed... I'm a collector by nature. But I've got to bite the bullet and say "no, thanks."

Go through them and make sure there's no special pressings, odd covers, &c before you let them go. Maybe the ultra-unique stuff is worth keeping/selling to collectors?

Another idea - I gave hundred of my father's blues, folk & union songs collection to WFMU in New Jersey, Got an alt. radio station around that wants 'em?
