Invisible Sisters: A Memoir

Invisible Sisters is Jessica Handler’s powerful tale of coming of age as the daughter of progressive Jewish parents who moved to Atlanta to participate in the social-justice movement of the 1960s, the healthy sister living in the shadow of her siblings’ illnesses, a daughter in a family torn apart by impossible circumstances, and as a young woman struggling to redefine herself after her sisters’ deaths.

Handler’s baby sister had been born with Kostmann’s Syndrome—a congenital blood disorder so rare that it appears in one in every two million births—and she and her family grew accustomed to the constantly shifting demands of illness. But when her younger sister was diagnosed with leukemia at age six, Jessica’s world, and her family, began to unravel. By the age of nine, Jessica Handler had begun to introduce herself as the “well sibling” and to consider the very real possibility that one day, she would be the only one left.

Invisible Sisters is the award-winning memoir of the unforgettable journey that she and her family faced.

It's getting be a lot like Bookzilla time...

You're right, that doesn't quite scan with "a lot like Christmas" but go with it for me.

The Decatur Book Festival is coming up in two, yes TWO, weeks! It's one of my favorite literary events for eleventy-hundred reasons.

Here are five:

1. It's local and we're proud. Locally located, but the authors are local AND national. And international. Seventy five thousand people came last year.

2. Did you know that Natasha Trethewey is the Keynote speaker this year? She's your poet laureate, America.

3. Did you know that Rodney Crowell and Mary Karr are performing together at the festival?

4. I'll be moderating a panel on Saturday at the Eddie's Attic stage about "The Artists Struggle" with two terrific novelists, Ashley Ream (Losing Clementine) and Meg Howrey (The Crane's Dance)

5. The whole fabulous three day schedule is here .

PS: Stacey Shulman and I are reprising our "Yoga and Writing" workshop on Friday at 4pm as part of the conference workshops!

Thank you so much for this reminder! Unfortunately, I can't make your yoga and writing workshop (again), but I'll keep my fingers crossed that they'll be another one!
